Introducing our Carne Guisada Starter! Rich, hearty, and bursting with flavor, Carne Guisada is definitely up there for Mexico’s most delicious and comforting dishes. Meat simmers in a gravy of roasted tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, and a mix of dried and fresh chile peppers. It’s worth noting how many iterations of this dish there are - carne guisada in Spanish simply means “stewed meat” and every family has their own version. However, the commonality is the slow-cooked tenderness of the meat, typically beef, and the thick, delicious sauce - at first bite, it’s easy to see why Carne Guisada is such a beloved dish. Here at Cookwell, we wanted to pay homage to these great flavors and make it easy for anyone to enjoy it at home. Enjoy this starter made with fresh tomatoes, roasted onion, a blend of dried chile peppers, and a traditional spice blend.

How to prepare:

  • Take 3-4 lbs. of beef stew meat and lightly season with salt and pepper. Dust meat with 1 Tbsp. of flour per lb. of meat.
  • Preheat a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add 3 Tbsp. of oil and the seasoned meat, stirring until lightly browned.
  • Add the jar of Carne Guisada Starter and stir to coat the meat with the sauce.
  • Cover and cook on low heat for 1-1.5 hours, or place in the oven for 2-3 hours at 275F, stirring occasionally until the meat is tender.
  • Serve in flour tortillas, and garnish with your preferred toppings.
